Spirit Beasts

A spirit beast (灵兽) is a companion bound to you for good - it advances through the same realms you do, on its own XP pool, and serves you according to what kind of creature it is.

You may keep one bound beast at a time. Release it before binding another. It is summoned and dismissed at will, keeps its own vanilla AI while it is out, is pulled back to you whenever it strays further than Leash-Distance (24 blocks), and despawns on its own the moment you log out.

The system is enabled by default (Beasts-Enabled).

The Three Kinds

A species' kind is what makes collecting a second beast worth doing. A dismissed beast does nothing at all - the bonus is for keeping it at your side.

KindWhat it doesDefaults
GuardianRaises your outgoing damage, and fights beside you with its own AI.Guardian-Damage-Percent-Base 4%, +0.6% per level.
WardenCuts your incoming damage.Warden-Reduction-Percent-Base 5%, +0.7% per level, capped at 40%.
GathererMultiplies your meditation Qi while summoned.Gatherer-Qi-Multiplier-Base x1.15, +0.02 per level.

Every figure is multiplied by the species' own Power, and again by Element-Resonance-Multiplier (1.25) when the beast's element matches your chosen dao.

Taming

Use a Beast Taming Talisman on a wild creature from the roster whose health has fallen to Tame-Max-Health-Percent (30%) or less. Wound it first, then bind it.

Your chance is the species' own TameChance, plus:

The result is capped at Tame-Chance-Max (0.95). With Tame-Consume-Talisman-On-Failure true (the default) a failed attempt still costs you the talisman, and the beast is left standing where it was.

Hatching

Spirit Beast Eggs drop from creature kills at Egg-Kill-Drop-Chance (1.5%). Use one to break it open and whatever sleeps inside bonds itself to you, chosen at random weighted by each species' EggWeight. A species with an egg weight of 0 never hatches and must be tamed in the wild. An egg respects MinRealm the same way taming does, and hatching while you already keep a beast is refused.

The Roster

MinRealm is a realm index — 0 is Body Refinement, 1 Qi Condensation, 2 Foundation Establishment, 3 Golden Core Formation, 4 Nascent Soul. The last three columns are all the beast's own realm, never yours.

A beast's element is its own nature and has nothing to do with its owner's — matching them is a bonus, not a requirement. Nothing about a species is hardcoded, so a server owner (or another mod) can add creatures to this list, give one an art, point it at an evolution, or make it rideable.

Raising It

A beast advances through the same realms and stages you do, on its own XP pool. Each stage costs Beast-Base-Xp-Requirement (120) x Beast-Xp-Growth-Rate (1.35) ^ level.

SourceDefault
Your killsBeast-Xp-Per-Kill 12, multiplied by Beast-Xp-Own-Kill-Multiplier (2) when the beast landed the blow itself.
FeedingBeast-Xp-Per-Qi-Item-Point 0.75 per point of Qi in what you feed it.
Your meditationMeditation-Qi-Share-Percent 12% of the Qi you draw.

The meditation share is a bonus by default - you still bank the full amount - unless Meditation-Share-Taken-From-Owner is set, which turns it into a genuine tithe deducted before your own Qi is credited.

Beast-Realm-Capped-By-Owner (true) means a beast can never out-rank its master: it stalls at your realm until you advance.

Feeding takes the item in your hand. Cores are worth exactly what you would have absorbed - 30, 80 and 220 for Spirit, Profound and Divine - a Spirit Stone is worth 40, and any of the four alchemy pills is worth 25. Anything else, a beast will not eat.

Beast Arts

A raised beast is not only a stat block that follows you. Since 0.7.2 it learns arts of its own — the companion-side counterpart of your techniques, with their own cooldowns and their own unlock realms.

The Five Arts
ArtUnlock RealmCooldownWhat it does
Rending Claw (裂爪)Body Refinement9sA sweep at everything pressing in around the beast — radius 3.5, 4 damage + 0.6 per beast level, physical. The art nearly every Guardian starts with.
Ember Maw (焰口)Qi Condensation14sA breath of fire — radius 5, 6 damage + 0.8 per level, as Fire. Rare: only the Emberwulf and the Cave Rex ever learn it.
Stone Hide (石甲)Foundation Establishment30sNot a strike. 8 seconds of damage reduction laid over its master — 10% + 0.5 per level, capped at 35%. What a Warden is for.
Spirit Siphon (吸灵)Qi Condensation45sNot a strike. Pulls 8 Qi + 1.5 per level out of the air and hands it to its owner. The Gatherer’s art.
Beast Soul Howl (兽魂啸)Golden Core Formation60sThe late roar any kind may learn: it mends its master for 12 + 1.2 per level. Only the four terminal forms reach it.

Every magnitude above scales on the beast’s own level rather than its realm, so a long-raised companion of a modest species is not embarrassed by a freshly evolved one.

Two rules shape how these feel. An art belongs to a species, not to an individual — a Fox will never learn Ember Maw however long you raise it, and the roster above is the whole truth about which creature can learn what. And each art unlocks at the beast's own realm: you cannot lend your companion your cultivation, so a Nascent Soul master with a freshly tamed wolf has a wolf that knows one art.

Your beast uses them on its own when a fight starts within about a dozen blocks of it, choosing whatever is off cooldown and useful. You can also call one deliberately with /cultivation beast art {name}. Both halves are switchable independently — Beast-Arts-Autonomous and Beast-Arts-Owner-Commanded — so a server that wants companions to be purely reactive, or purely commanded, can have either.

Evolution

Half the roster is not a destination. Twelve of the 24 species grow into another, and the chains run several links deep:

The Growth Chains
  • Wolf_White → Leopard_Snow → Tiger_Sabertooth — the longest Guardian line, ending in a mount.
  • Wolf_Black → Emberwulf — Void into Fire, and the only common route to Ember Maw.
  • Hyena → Fen_Stalker, and Raptor_Cave → Rex_Cave.
  • Armadillo → Tortoise, and Bear_Grizzly → Bear_Polar → Yeti — the Warden line, rideable from the middle link onward.
  • Toad_Rhino → Toad_Rhino_Magma.
  • Cactee → Snapdragon → Trillodon, and Fox → Spark_Living — the two Gatherer lines.

Evolving is deliberate, not automatic: run /cultivation beast evolve once the beast has reached the target form's realm. It carries its levels, its XP and its bond across, and takes on the new form's element, power and arts. Nothing is re-rolled and nothing is lost — a black wolf that becomes an Emberwulf is the same companion, and it keeps its name.

Note that an evolution frequently changes the beast's element: Wolf_Black is Void and Emberwulf is Fire, Hyena is Poison and Fen_Stalker is Water. If you were matching your companion's element to your own Dao, that is worth knowing before you press it. If the beast cannot evolve yet, the command tells you exactly what is still missing rather than simply refusing.

Mounts

Seven species grow large enough to carry a rider — Tiger_Sabertooth, Rex_Cave, Bear_Grizzly, Bear_Polar, Yeti, Moose_Bull and Trillodon. Raise one to the realm listed in the roster and /cultivation beast mount puts you on its back.

Only Moose_Bull is rideable early, at realm 2; everything else asks for realm 3 or 4, and four of the seven are terminal evolution forms rather than creatures you can tame directly. Riding one is therefore something you arrive at by raising a companion for a long time, not something you buy.

Two ways to travel

A mount is the second flight-free way to cross ground, alongside Sword Flying — and unlike the sword it costs no Qi at all to keep going. Both are ordinary right-click-to-mount interactions; if right-clicking does nothing on a build before 0.7.2, that is the interaction bug fixed in this release, not something you are doing wrong.
